Choosing the right plate holder for your motorbike or scooter
First of all, it is important to note that the decree of 15 December 2016 requires motorcyclists to affix an approved number plate to the rear of their bike. Following the implementation of this order, riders could choose between six plate sizes to prominently display their motorbike registration. However, this option was only available to two-wheeler owners for a few months. Since 1 July 2017, all motorbikes on the road must have a number plate that is 210 mm wide and 130 mm high. Failure to comply with these dimensions exposes drivers to a fine of approximately €135. If you are planning to replace your number plate holder, you should therefore choose a product that allows you to install a number plate that complies with the current regulations. In addition to complying with the law, you should choose your number plate bracket according to the style you want to give your motorbike. The current regulations do not stipulate any particular style for number plates. Depending on your taste and the elements that make up the rear of your motorbike (tail light, indicators, etc.), you can opt for a plate holder with or without a designer lighting system, located high up or directly next to your rear wheel. For your information, French law imposes a few rules concerning the positioning of the number plate. It must be equipped with a lighting system, be located at least 20 cm from the ground and have an inclination of less than 30 degrees. Retractable or concealed number plate holders are not permitted. The use of such a plate holder can lead to penalties such as a fine of €1,500.
